The Gur

The Gur is the name given to the deepest, most instinctive expression of Michael Hunter’s music.

A Scottish singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist. Born in Kelso and raised in Peebles in the Scottish Borders, Michael first took to the bagpipes as a wee eight-year-old. In early twenties, he taught himself to play guitar, guided by instinct, curiosity and a soul and ear for music that has continued to lead him ever since. The other instruments, rhythms and sounds came naturally along the way, each one becoming another language through which to tell a story.

At the centre of it all is a voice that carries both grit and grace. The  voice of a whisky-worn angel. Raw, soulful and unmistakably Scottish, it holds the weight of experience while reaching for something beyond worlds and words.

The Gur is not a reinvention. It is a return to something that has always lived at Michael’s core and moved through his music. At this point in his journey, he is choosing to bring that ancient rhythm to the surface to share the stories, sounds and heartbeat of what came before, what lives within and what will continue long after us.

Rooted in Scotland and shaped by a life of experience and travel, The Gur brings together modern Scottish folk music, evocative songwriting, powerful vocals, tribal drums, guitars and bagpipes. It is one expression within Michael’s multidimensional musical identity, but  the one that leads him closest to the place where instinct, memory, heart and soul become  one and one becomes all.
