Some music stays with you because it recognises something you haven’t quite found the words for. Michael Hunter has always felt like that to me and many: heartfelt, soul-felt, and unmistakably his.
As one of his friends, I’ve had the privilege of a front row seat to his musical journey. I’ve heard his sound shift and deepen over the years, while something at its centre has remained familiar. His music has a way of holding the in between: the places where feelings meet, where edges soften, and where different parts of life can exist together.
A musical journey that keeps coming home
There was a time when it felt we watching him evolve with the music. Now, we hear something different. The music seems to be revolving back towards him - towards his own roots, his own soul, and the sound that was waiting there all along.
This isn’t the becoming. It’s the return.
Not a return to where he started, exactly, but a return with everything he gathered along the way. The years, the experiences, the changes: they’re all there in the music, giving it a deeper sense of self.
The Scottish Borders in the sound
He was born in the Scottish Borders, and we hear the pull of that place in the way his music feels grounded. Not as a description of a landscape, but as something deeper: a connection to the soil, to the roots, to the heartbeat of home.
For many years, he has shared his talent with the world as Michael Hunter Music. We have watched the music travel through different seasons, finding new shapes while keeping its soul. And now, it feels as though those roots are calling him back—not backwards, but inward.
Perhaps that’s what makes this moment feel so powerful. The music isn’t searching for somewhere else to go. It’s finding its way back. This is the return.
An ode to you
This is an ode to you, Michael: to your music, your roots, and the way you keep making room for the in-between.
On behalf of all those privileged to enough to experience you, we are grateful to have heard the journey unfold from close by. Here’s to the music still to come, and to the parts of you it will keep returning to the light.
